Nobody at HIT Cares What You Look Like Doing It
Awkward punches, sweaty hair and absolutely no idea which side you’re supposed to kick with? You’re doing fine.
There’s a very specific kind of confidence required to walk into a workout when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.
Maybe your punches feel awkward.
Maybe your roundhouse kick looks less like a roundhouse kick and more like you’re trying to shake something off your shoe.
Maybe everyone else seems to know exactly where they’re going while you’re still trying to remember which one is the jab.
And suddenly you become extremely aware that other people can see you.
Everyone Is Busy Doing Their Own Workout
It’s easy to assume everyone else in the room is noticing the things you’re noticing.
The missed combination.
The weird kick.
The fact that you got winded faster than you expected.
Meanwhile, the person beside you is probably trying to remember what comes after the cross.
Someone else is wondering if they have one more sit-up in them.
And somebody across the room is trying very hard not to make eye contact with the trainer because they know she’s about to make their station harder.
Everybody has their own thing going on.
Nobody Starts Out Looking Like They Know What They’re Doing
There is no secret group of people who entered their first Hit already knowing perfect technique.
Everyone learned.
Everyone got corrected.
Everyone mixed up combinations.
Everyone had that moment where their brain understood the move and their arms and legs absolutely did not.
That’s part of learning something new.
Sweaty Is Kind of the Point
You might sweat.
Your hair might stop cooperating.
Your face might turn bright red.
Your carefully planned gym outfit may look significantly less put together 17 minutes later.
Excellent.
You came to work out.
HIT is not a photoshoot. You don’t need to look polished while throwing punches, kicking bags, doing strength exercises and getting your heart rate up.
There is no prize for looking effortlessly composed through all of it.
Your Trainer Is Watching — But Not for the Reason You Think
Yes, your trainer probably noticed your kick.
But she wasn’t thinking, Wow, that looked awkward.
She was looking at your technique.
She was checking your form.
She was figuring out whether you needed a correction, a modification or maybe a little extra challenge.
That attention isn’t judgment.
It’s literally what she’s there for.
And if your trainer comes over and shows you how to adjust something?
Good. That means you’re learning.
Awkward Usually Doesn’t Last Very Long
One day you’re thinking about every single movement.
Jab. Cross. Hook. Wait, which side?
Then eventually, something clicks.
You stop thinking so hard about where your feet go.
Your punches feel sharper.
Your kicks feel stronger.
You hear a combination and your body just… does it.
You may not even notice when it happens.
That’s the funny thing about getting better.
You Don’t Have to Look Confident to Start
You can feel nervous and still walk through the door.
You can feel uncoordinated and still throw the punch.
You can have no idea what you’re doing and let your trainer teach you.
Confidence doesn’t always come first.
So if part of you is worried about looking awkward at your first Hit, come anyway.
Be awkward.
Miss a combination.
Get sweaty.
Ask questions.
Learn.
Because everyone in that room had a first workout too.
And they’re probably a lot more focused on surviving their own station than judging yours.
